Online Writing Classes August–September 2025

The Orange County Library System here in Central Florida holds writing classes over Zoom, so anyone anywhere may attend. The Library Card field on the registration form is optional. If you don’t have an OCLS library card, just leave it blank. Please be aware that the library does not record these sessions or offer replays.

A New Perspective on Viewpoint — August 12, 7–8 p.m.

Point of View is the channel through which the reader experiences a story, so getting it right is crucial. Yet viewpoint slips are among the most common errors we see in new writers’ manuscripts. The root cause of this is confusion. This class will separate character from grammatical person to help writers understand how to deliver an engaging story, regardless of which pronouns are used.

Edit Like A Pro: Narrative Nonfiction — September 2, 7–8 p.m.

Narrative nonfiction uses novel-writing techniques to tell true stories. Most nonfiction writers have not learned these techniques because in most nonfiction the emphasis is on reporting facts, not storytelling. But narrative nonfiction requires an entirely different structure. We will discuss how to provide a dramatic story without fabrication by learning how to plug the true events of your story into a dramatic arc. Using a professional editor’s checklist, we’ll take a targeted approach to self-editing that will help writers avoid analysis paralysis and have confidence that their work is thoroughly edited and ready to submit.

If you register for one of these events, the event host will send you an email with a link to access the Zoom room before the event. This email will also include any applicable handouts.
