Online Writing Classes May–July 2025

The Orange County Library System here in Central Florida holds writing workshops over Zoom, so anyone anywhere may attend. The Library Card field on the registration form is optional. If you don’t have an OCLS library card, just leave it blank. Please be aware that the library does not record these sessions or offer replays.

How to Give a Useful Critique — May 6, 7–8 p.m.

Writers need critique partners. But many writers are reluctant to join a critique group because they’ve heard horror stories or have had a bad experience themselves. This workshop will equip writers to find or form a critique group, and provide suggestions on how to give meaningful critiques that identify problems without hurting feelings. Joining a good critique group is one of the most beneficial things a writer can do, but only if the group is founded on trust and civility.

Writing Vivid Descriptions — June 16, 7–8 p.m.

Description is a necessary element of both fiction and narrative nonfiction; it can also enhance reader enjoyment of other types of nonfiction. Nevertheless, people differ greatly about how much is enough and how much is too much. This class teaches how to determine what descriptive style best fits your genre, story, and voice. Learn to engage the senses, keep descriptions in proportion, and use word choices to control the emotional tone of a scene.

Publishing 101: The Basics of the Book Business — July 8, 7–8 p.m.
Target audience: People who are new to book publishing

With the myriad publishing options available, the industry can be confusing even to those of us who’ve been in it awhile! We’ll examine traditional publishing, self-publishing, and some options that don’t neatly fit either category. We’ll look at the factors to consider when choosing whether to self-publish or seek traditional publication. You’ll learn the difference between big publishing houses and small presses, as well as what to look out for when hiring people to help you self-publish.

If you register for one of these events, you will receive an email with a link to access the Zoom room before the event from the event host.
